The Sumatran Elephant Conservation Initiative e.V. is a German based non-profit organization that supports the conservation of Sumatran elephants since 2010.

Sumatran elephants are a critically endangered subspecies of the Asian elephant, which occurs exclusively on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. There are only around 1000 animals left in the wild, and the trend is decreasing. Better protection is urgently needed.

To turn the fate of the Sumatran elephant around, it is crucial to have the right people in the right places. Consequently, and as part of our long term strategy, we are supporting young Indonesian conservationists during their first steps through the SECI Small Grants program in cooperation with the UGM Wildlife Conservation Centre and other institutions. Short term needs of local projects are supported through our Emergency Fund. With the ELOC project, we are developing an innovative bioacoustic monitoring system for Asian elephants and the threats they face.
